Woodwalton Fen - Bittern

17.1.13

Today I went to Woodwalton Fen, and in the frost and bright sunlight, it was very beautiful. At Rothschild's Mere I spotted a Bittern at the reed edge, and it stayed there for over half an hour. It didn't do anything except very deliberately take a few steps every now and then. When a Heron flow over, they both looked at each other in an interesting way. No other birds on the mere except a large group of Mallard, a few Coot, and two Marsh Harrier briefly flew over. I kicked up a couple of pheasant elsewhere, and there is a family of four swans at a junction of one of the paths.
